PMUY 2.0 is just an extension of PMUY that earlier PM Modi launched under the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on 1st May 2016.

A total of 1,000 women got the Ujjwala Yojana benefit during the video conferencing event. Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath also attended the event and physically passed on the benefits to 10 women. During the event, the Prime Minister also interacted with beneficiaries of the Ujjwala. PM Modi talked to beneficiaries of Uttarakhand, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and other states. He asked them about their experience before getting the LPG connection.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 2.0 scheme?

Ujjwala is a scheme of the government of India that provides LPG connections to low-income family households. It aims to provide clean cooking fuel, such as LPG, to rural households. It was first launched in 2016 as Ujjwala 1.0 to provide LPG connections to five crore women households members of the Below Poverty Line (BPL). Later the scheme was expanded by the central government to include women beneficiaries from seven categories. In this year’s Union Budget of 2021-2022, an additional one crore LPG connection under the scheme was announced by Modi sarkar. These connections aim to provide deposit-free LPG connections to low-income families who could not cover under the previous phase of the Ujjwala Yojana scheme.

Why was Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana needed?

In India, indoor air pollution is the second biggest killer after high blood pressure. According to Census 2011, nearly 121 million households used traditional stoves (chullha) that trapped them in a highly polluted environment. In 2010, indoor air pollution caused two premature deaths every minute. Dirty cooking fuels have been a major contributor to this pollution.

What’s the impact so far?

  • Distributing the LPG connection is a job half done. People are either reluctant to give up wooden stoves or can’t afford to get LPG cylinder refilled.
  • The beneficiaries keep using LPG minimally so that they don’t have to quit wooden stoves completely, sometimes to the extent that a single LPG cylinder lasts up to a year.
  • In other situations, this happens because refilling a cylinder is unaffordable for many since the government provides no support at this stage.

This journey from Ujjwala Yojana 1.0 to Ujjwala Yojana 2.0

  • The goal for Ujjwala Yojana 1.0, which was launched in 2016, was to offer LPG connections to 5 crore women from BPL homes.
  • Following that, in April 2018, the scheme was expanded to cover women from seven additional groups (SC/ST, PMAY, AAY, Most Backward Classes, Tea Garden, Forest Dwellers and Islands).
  • In addition, the aim was lowered to 8 million LPG connections. This goal was met in August of this year, seven months ahead of schedule.
  • Provision for an additional one crore LPG connections under the PMUY scheme was announced in the Union budget for FY 21-22. These one crore extra PMUY connections under Ujjwala 2.0 are intended to provide deposit-free LPG connections to low-income families who were not eligible for PMUY in its previous phase.
  • Ujjwala 2.0 would offer the beneficiaries a deposit-free LPG connection as well as a free refill and hotplate. In addition, the enrollment process will only necessitate a minimal amount of paperwork.
  • Migrants will not be required to produced ration cards or address proof under Ujjwala 2.0. A self-declaration will suffice as both a “family declaration” and a “proof of address.” Ujjwala 2.0 will contribute to the Prime Minister’s goal of universal LPG access.
